2010 grant recipient - ware high school
Fifteen GSA members, who wanted to improve their skills and broaden their horizons, attended a symposium at Westfield State University on March 25. The GSA trip was made possible by a grant from the LBGT Coalition of Western Massachusetts, which gave a grant to pay for the bus, and by the QSA of Westfield University, which provides the program, including breakfast and
lunch, without cost to the students.

I think this was probably exactly the impact you were hoping to have – taking kids from a relatively sheltered environment and giving them resources and information they wouldn’t have otherwise. Their responses were all thoughtful and overwhelmingly positive. Thank you to both the Westfield QSA and the LBGT Coalition for making this possible.

Responses from Ware High School students
* "I went to the bullying workshop and heard some people’s stories about how they are bullied every day with no one there to help. That hurt me and opened my mind up to a lot of things...one of the best things that I brought back with me was four new friends."
* "I think the GSA Conference was a really good experience. It was a very good eye-opener and it showed me how badly people get hurt due to the action of others." * "I really wanted to do this because my aunt is a lesbian. She is the nicest ladyin the world and the funniest, and I couldn’t imagine her being bullied or treated different. This conference was really helpful. I hope I can go next year." * "At the GSA Conference at Westfield State, I met quite a few people. The most memorable experience was seeing everyone’s honesty as they told their stories about what they had gone through. It was very touching to see that everyone could be so open with the things they have to suffer through every day. During the workshops my group took part in, we witnessed another member break down into tears as they released the sadness they hold in every day, from being picked on or being unable to tell the people close to them about their identity. I will never forget the experience I had at the GSA conference at Westfield State." Click here to read more! |
