Countdown to Valley Gives!
Dear Valued Community Members:
On 12.12.13 we will come together for Valley Gives and it's your chance to make a real difference in the work that we do. Valley Gives is a 24-hour online day of giving and a powerful example of coming together for an important cause.
The LGBT Coalition is engaged in meaningful work within the community and your support is critical, now more than ever. Most of you know that the organization is undergoing tremendous changes with new leadership, a revitalized focus on LGBT youth, and exciting new programming and events. As your new Interim Director, along with the new Board of Directors, I am committed to making this organization a viable resource of support and empowerment for the LGBT community.
The money we raise during Valley Gives will be allocated to developing and supporting our new LGBT youth mentoring program. Many LGBT youth in Western Mass lack access to the support and resources they need to create affirming spaces in their lives. Our new mentoring program will connect youth with a volunteer mentor from the community who can offer advice, provide support, and be a constant source of affirmation for youth. The training for mentors will address the critical issues of self-acceptance, handling bullies, coming out to friends and family, talking to parents, and thoughts of suicide or self-harm. The program will also emphasize a focus on academic success, leadership development, and personal enrichment. The money raised from Valley Gives will ensure that mentors are fully trained and comfortable with their roles, and that the participating youth feel supported.
In addition to our new LGBT youth mentoring program, we will continue to host the annual National GSA Day event in Springfield. This year we are adding new and meaningful activities to the event, including a youth-led workshop on positive self-images, a teacher-focused workshop and an improvisational humor session on combating bullies in school. The LGBT Coalition also hopes to host the area's first youth pride parade, to provide a celebration and safe space that is more appropriate and enjoyable for LGBT youth in Western Mass. In the long-term, we would like to establish a physical location that will be a safe community space for LGBT youth to come for support, encouragement, and acceptance. Visit our giving page to learn more about how your generous donation will support our invaluable work in the community.
This is our first year participating in Valley Gives and we have set ambitious goals that we need your help with to make a reality. We want to raise $5,000 to fund our new LGBT youth programs. Additionally, Valley Gives will be awarding additional funds to the organization that has the most unique donors and we believe we can win that prize money!
Here's what you can do to make our first Valley Gives experience a day to remember:
